Ed/it

Ed/it is a housing densification strategy that focuses on upgrading an existing terraced house and creating new dwellings by redistributing the space. These new dwellings will be designed to meet the diverse generational needs of the community, emphasizing green neighbourhoods that encourage outdoor activity and intergenerational connections. The goal is to make the building energy- and material-neutral through passive building principals and our zero-impact tool to ensure responsible material selection aligned with available bio- and production capacities.

VIRTU/e’s proposal is not only a local intervention; it’s a strategy that can expand to support the transition to sustainable cities worldwide, starting in Woensel West with the potential to grow globally.

During the Dutch Design Week 2024, VIRTU/e will exhibit the final housing densification concept through interactive models and displays. We aim to facilitate open discussions about our proposal and its future potential.

The Concept

  • Multi-generational household

By creating a multi-generational household, this provides a system where younger people look out for the elderly. This provides housing to multiple target groups from elderly to starters.

  • Materialisation

The materialisation of the building is mainly focused on the Building Physics, taking into account the material bio-capacity and lifespan.

  • Streetscape

A focus on the surrounding plot is also important for the project. This ensures that there is sufficient parking space, safe outdoor space for children, as well as keeping the bio-dversity intact.

The plan is to create an adaptable top-up system that can be replicated across the Dutch terraced housing typology.

The top-up adds on top of the existing structure and create more dwellings in the process to help combat the housing crisis in the Netherlands.
